The pharmacy industry’s role in the 340B Drug Pricing Program continues to expand...latest analysis finds that nearly 18,000 pharmacy locations contract with 340B-eligible covered entities. That accounts for more than one in four U.S. retail, mail, and specialty pharmacy locations...Walgreens remains the biggest player, with about the same number of locations as those of Walmart, CVS, Rite Aid, Kroger, and Albertsons combined...Amidst the contract pharmacy boom...what’s really going on. How many prescriptions do contract pharmacies provide at discounted prices to uninsured, underinsured, and low-income patients? Who is really benefiting from the contract pharmacy business?…a 340B contract pharmacy doesn’t earn traditional spreads and dispensing fees. They instead profit from fees paid by the 340B entity. Given providers’ substantial profit opportunities, a 340B entity can afford fees that often far exceed a pharmacy’s typical profits from dispensing a third-party-paid prescription...There are many other profit opportunities...The extensive use of 340B contract pharmacies allows hospitals and other providers to benefit from 340B drug discounts earned from commercially paid prescriptions dispensed by contract pharmacies...Do needy patients benefit? No one knows. Covered entities are not specifically obligated to share any 340B savings with financially needy or uninsured patents, nor are they required to disclose how they use profits from the 340B program...

Valeant is attempting to restructure a deal with Walgreens after warning it is losing money on a large chunk of medicines sold through the chain of U.S. drugstores...The Canadian drugmaker will consider terminating the agreement within months unless the situation improves...Valeant...slashed its annual profit forecasts for the third time in six months, a move it blamed in part on its deal with Walgreens, which dispenses many of its best-selling medicines...Walgreens is filling prescriptions for some of the company's top drugs without first ensuring that the patient's health insurer will pay for them, resulting in losses for Valeant...Stefano Pessina...who runs Walgreens...negotiated a very favourable deal for Walgreens in exchange for supporting the drugmaker, which was reeling from the accounting irregularities, as well as a political outcry over the high price of its medicines...about a quarter of Valeant drugs sold through Walgreens are being dispensed without securing this "prior authorisation"...(Valeant)...would consider terminating the agreement with Walgreens unless things improve quickly, and believes that a "material adverse change" clause in the contract would provide legal cover...

On April 30th, 2016, local and federal agencies will once again partner together to sponsor the Prescription Drug Round Up event in Washoe County. Since the area’s first event in the fall of 2009, the Round Ups in Washoe County have collected over 1.6 million prescription pills. More than 230,000 of those pills were in categories that are commonly diverted and abused, such as painkillers, depressants and stimulants...Medications – including household prescription and over the counter pills and liquids – can be dropped off at the Round Up event with no questions asked. Citizens are asked to bring medications in their original containers if possible, and may mark out the patient’s name if they wish. Prescription waste or expired/surplus medications from medical offices or pharmaceutical companies or their representatives are not accepted at this event. In addition, volunteers from Northern Nevada HOPES and the Northern Nevada Outreach Team will be collecting residential sharps and providing information to the community about proper syringe disposal...Round Up Locations April 30th 10:00am – 2:00pm:

The last few months have witnessed the unraveling of the remarkable life sciences company Theranos, culminating in the latest news that federal regulators may ban founder Elizabeth Holmes from the blood-testing industry for at least two years. The company is also facing a federal criminal investigation into whether it misled investors about its technology and company operations...How has this widely acclaimed biomedical innovator fallen so far, so fast?...Theranos' revolutionary claim...wowed investors, journalists and even groups like the Cleveland Clinic and Walgreens with what you might call an "iMedicine" vision of blood testing...A few drops of blood from a fingertip are collected into a "nanotainer" collection tube and analyzed on the company’s proprietary machine, named after...Thomas Edison. How exactly the Edison devices work is unknown. But the claim was that many – possibly dozens – of tests could be run on those few drops of blood...Millions invested without any proof?...Why didn’t investors and journalists dig more deeply, such as by demanding a head-to-head comparison of Theranos' Edison machine to standard chemistry analyzers?...Part of the problem seems to have been the secrecy surrounding these types of startups...which means that there was...no peer-reviewed information out there about its technology...the leading explanation seems to be that they were enthralled by the company’s charismatic young founder...It still remains possible that Theranos has discovered a breakthrough technology...But even if this increasingly unlikely prospect is a reality, Holmes' erstwhile acolytes need to remember the lessons learned from the pantheon of past pied pipers and summed up by statistician W. Edwards Deming: In God we trust; all others must bring data.

Less than one month following Walgreens decision to terminate its relationship with Theranos, the blood-testing lab on Thursday announced that the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services has revoked the company's CLIA certificate, among other sanctions. The revocation of Theranos' CLIA certificate precludes the owners and operators of Theranos from owning, operating or directing a lab until at least July 2018...In addition to the revocation of Theranos' CLIA certificate, the full list of CMS sanctions include:

• Limitation of the laboratory’s CLIA certificate for the specialty of hematology;
• A civil money penalty;
• A directed portion of a plan of correction;
• Suspension of the laboratory’s approval to receive Medicare and Medicaid payments for any services performed for the specialty of hematology; and
• Cancellation of the laboratory’s approval to receive Medicare and Medicaid payments for all laboratory services.

Walgreens has rolled out an online mental health platform that offers informational resources, screening tools, a therapist/psychiatrist locator, and live video chats with mental health professionals...The drug chain said...that in tandem with Mental Health America, it has launched Mental Health Answers...visitors can access MHA’s provider locator tool; free online screenings that enable users to assess symptoms for a range of conditions, such as depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder and PTSD; and a library of articles and other content on mental health...MHA also can facilitate follow-up treatment and care through providers and specialists in local communities, as well as via its affiliates nationwide...The mental telehealth service expands Walgreens’ current medical telehealth partnership with MDLIVE...Teletherapy is an excellent option if you’re looking for a more convenient, private, and affordable way to receive behavioral therapy...Through our relationship with Walgreens, we are making it easier for consumers to get help by providing the flexibility to schedule therapy at a time that works best for them, and without the need for travel time, waiting rooms or office visits...

Walgreens has agreed to pay $500,000 in penalties, fees, and costs related to misleading advertising practices that led to New York customers being overcharged for products..."Businesses are required to ensure that their advertisements are truthful and not misleading..."When consumers purchase products at retail stores in New York, they should be able to rely on the prices displayed in advertisements and on shelf tags and not have to worry about being overcharged when they get to the register."...Walgreens has agreed to reform its advertising and business practices in New York...It must remove expired shelf tags within 36 hours, restrict the use of "Smart Buy" or "Great Buy," and refrain from using "Last Chance" or "Clearance" tags when the item is available at a reduced price for an extended period of time...Walgreens will also conduct internal and external price check audits in stores. If a store fails 2 consecutive external audits, it will have to pay a $2500 penalty.

...Walgreens said...it would end its relationship with Theranos, in another blow for the blood-testing company that was once lauded for its innovative approach but has increasingly come under scrutiny...Walgreens said it would shutter all 40 Theranos Wellness Centers at its stores in Arizona, having already stopped Theranos laboratory testing services at its location in Palo Alto, California..."In light of the voiding of a number of test results, and as the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services has rejected Theranos' plan of correction and considers sanctions, we have carefully considered our relationship with Theranos and believe it is in our customers' best interests to terminate our partnership," Brad Fluegel, Walgreens senior vice president...Theranos was once praised for its fast, less-invasive blood testing technology but the company has found itself in the spotlight after media reports raised questions about the accuracy of its proprietary tests...Federal prosecutors from the U.S. Attorney's office and the SEC have investigated Theranos over whether it misled investors...

Walgreens’ posting of a seemingly sympathetic blog about the use of medical marijuana has created quite a buzz, with some online observers speculating the retail chain has its sight on that lucrative industry...But a Walgreens spokesperson insists the chain has not taken a stance on the use of medical marijuana and cautions people against reading too much into the blog posting. Pharmacies cannot legally dispense medical marijuana...The blog, entitled "What is Medical Marijuana? Clarifying Clinical Cannabis," was written by Dahlia Sultan, who is a resident pharmacist at Walgreens and associated with the University of Illinois at Chicago...Sultan...suggests "marijuana provides pain relief in ways traditional medicines don’t" and "medical marijuana can improve appetite and relieve nausea in those who have cancer and may help relieve symptoms such as muscle stiffness in people who have multiple sclerosis."...Not surprisingly, the blog has attracted the attention of medical marijuana advocates. Some believe that pressure from giant retailers such as Walgreens could eventually convince the federal government to reclassify marijuana so that it could be dispensed by pharmacies...Jim Cohn, spokesperson for Walgreens, said that people shouldn’t read too much into the blog. "The content [of the blog] is strictly informative, and nowhere do we take any stance on the issue,"...

Walgreens...announced that it has installed 50 safe medication disposal kiosks in Walgreens drug stores across California, representing the first of two programs in California to combat drug abuse...By making safe medication disposal kiosks available in select California stores and expanding to other states this year, Walgreens is taking an important first step to curb the misuse of medications throughout the country...As a pharmacy, we are committed to playing a role in what must be a comprehensive solution to prevent prescription drug and opioid abuse…To kick off the launch of the safe medication disposal program in California, Walgreens will host a series of events with local lawmakers working to fight the drug abuse crisis in the state leading up to the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration’s National Prescription Drug Take Back Day on Saturday, April 30…Walgreens also is working to make naloxone, a potentially lifesaving opioid antidote, available without requiring a prescription from an individual’s physician at California pharmacies. The medication is currently available with a prescription in California and can be used in the event of an overdose to reverse the effects of heroin or other opioid drugs, and is administered by injection or nasal spray.
